Sezmra Svarog: Nora: A history of chick skins

This year will be Nora's 4th year of operation.  I have "Nora Appreciation Week" coming up on the 14th, so I thought I'd take a bit to reminisce all the way back to Day One!

Nora originally began as a fantasy-goth clothing store.  One fateful day while visiting Le Cadre, during an event, yours truly met Kimmera Madison.  Kimmera was a designer, herself, and she complimented me on my skin.  My skin was my own - I had worked on it shortly after I began using SL.  I spent all 250 of my starting Lindens trying to make it.  So, you could say that from my first day, I was a skinner.

Anyway - Kimmera showed me some then-popular skins and what she didn't like about them... and then asked me to make her a skin.  Thus it began!  I made it to her liking and she was the Prototype for the first Nora skin.  She did not mind that I would sell it in my own shop, which was kind of her!

This skin was essentially, 1.0 - it came in 7 skin tones, Vanilla, Caramel, Cocoa, Chocolate, Gothic Cream, Gothic Sky, and Gothic Lily.  The skin was a bit too harsh all around, and the colors were somewhat too rich.  I sure was proud at the time though!  The biggest complaint I received about it was the stomach.  Of course, I didn't have a lot of experience handpainting stomachs at the time.  Heee!
You may actually recognize the makeup here - it was ripped long ago and spread around as "free".  It's called Cherry Bomb.  Back then I sold basic skins and then sold separate makeup texture files.  It really was just a matter of time, as all thefts are in SL.
This was in 2004, sometime in the fall.  I wouldn't be until 2005 that I'd redo the skin for a 2.0 release. ...
I kept the same sale model, this time updating the body of the skin, and producing more makeup texture with a different face.  All future makeups would also fit on the older skin, so they were backwards compatible!  I thought I was super smart!  The newer skin was a bit smoother and not so harsh in the stomach area.  2.0 and 1.0 were both completely opaque skins.  Later on I would make a "Custoskin" version which was slightly transparent - that allowed the SL skin color sliders to change the tone.  That was a whole other adventure!

I also experienced my first skin theft issue about this time.  Needless to say, it was upsetting - as it was a complete skin that was "stolen", not just a head texture.  Thankfully a DMCA proved useful and the problem was corrected.  I'm sure there are quite a few other thefts I don't know about.  I try not to think of it.  SL can be frustrating on its own, anyway!

A makeup similar to this was also passed around in freebie packs, against my wishes.  It's called "Scarlet Vanilla".  This one was "Smoke Caramel".  It was fairly popular too, and I know why!  You girls love the smoky eyeshadow, don'tcha?

By this point, late 2005, I was gaining confidence in myself - people would compliment me on my [...]

Fabulously Free in SL: fabfree

I have some good news for me which might seem like bad news to some. Yesterday, I was offered a promotion in my First Life® job which has only been part time up until now. This promotion means full time hours and a heavy workload but it is a great opportunity for my family.

Does this mean FabFree is ending? No, this blog started out as a way to help the linden-impaired find fashion and will continue to do so. I just wont be blogging myself 4-5 times a day anymore.

Why are you telling us this? Simple, I am looking at a few new writers to FabFree. I have always wanted to find someone to focus mainly on the designer lucky chairs so I will be looking for this person as well.

If you are interested in writing for FabFree, please drop me a detailed notecard in world with the information below. Please remember that this is how I will be viewing your writing style:

AnnaH Couture: New @ *AnnaH*

So I was wearing this ETD Strengh hair for so many days, paring it with the Jaywalk Persephone Boots, but nothing else matches my pink stuff! I don't have much pink clothes... I was seriously needing something that would match prefectly with both hair and boots. That's when it realised that a belt would make the difference!

And then, Emma was born! It was all about PINK. Emma is a simple outfit, that comes with system skirt, flexi skirt and shorts. The shorts have sculpted cuffs. It also has a casual t-shirt with a cool design in the front. Then we have the belt... a large pink belt, in all layers that you may need!

I hope you like the new outfit as much as I do! As I said before Emma is also wearing hair from ETD (RFL Limited), boots from Jaywalk (4 RFL), skin from MM Skins.

Luv,
Ann

Shapes by Zada Goth Chic shape and "Bring me a Dream" skin

Zada Zenovka was kind enough to hand me her new "Goth Chic" character avatar. We chatted briefly about it one night.

"I love the character of Death from Sandman," Zada said, "so I'm going to make a complete skin and shape set in her honor."

Zada's Goth Chic character avatar pack is definitely complete. It has one base shape and then seven other iterations depending upon prim skirt or prim lashes, five varieties of Another Skin skin mods, prim lashes, three kinds of face lights (I'm wearing the gothique one), a few fun extras like Death's ankh, and eyes. The eyes are all dark and glittery and gorgeous, straight from the pages of Neil Gaiman.

Zada wrote something lyrical in the note within the character pack:

In Sandman, Death is a teen goth. She's full of youthful optimism and compassion, but also timeless wisdom. She knows that when the last lives in the universe dies, she'll be there to claim them, and yet she faces this knowledge with gentle humor. She's an incredibly compelling character to me, and I wanted to capture something of that in my own take on a sassy goth chick.

I do love it when creators have stories in mind when they create.

Silk Caravanserai: Freebie Friday: Free Skins

Got a box as a group gift from Arabian Romantic Ballroom, claiming to be some of the best free skins available. Inside were some Shy skins, which have been around for a while, some skins with a landmark to Crazy, and a skin called Cindy, with a landmark to Mel's Little Shop. You can join the Arabian Romantic ballroom group, which is a very cool place to go dancing, or you can find these free skins at the landmarks above. There is some other stuff in the box including some female body parts, but I didn't try those on. Here's a sampling of the skins:

Shy Skin in Caramelle7 Dark Neutral Makeup. There are several Sky makeup options included, but I liked this one the best.

Naturally Skin. Also Included are Extreme, Hot, and Perfect.

Cindy included in this makeup/style only.

Cindy full-body shot. The manicure is nice!

Shy Caramelle, but a different makeup called Beauty mark.

Hot skin, from the same set as Crazy but with a different, more pink coloration and shading as well as different makeup. The detail on things like the bottom of feet are great on these.

Please keep in mind that I shot these with full light straight on at noon in Windlight and with no beauty lights. The extreme lighting isn't what one usually encounters while enjoying one's Second Life experience, but it is handy for getting a good look at the skin.

Skin is really important in creating a "look" for one's avatar and most free skin isn't going to make us happy for long. But it's a good bridge for new users from system skin to buying good (and usually expensive) skin. It's also great for trying out new looks, or for when you need emergency skin for an outfit that you just have to wear but doesn't go at all with your current complexion. My best advice for finding great free skin is to find some skin designers that you like and join their groups. Many designers give out group gifts as wonderful try before you buy incentives as well as special holiday makeup that you can't get any other way. And the Lindens wonder why we want more than [...]

Nicky Ree: New DMCA SENT against aDiva

Please note I do NOT SELL my illustrated TGA files or have never sold my illustrated TGA files to anyone. If anyone is using or reselling any TGA files that are of my illustrated works, they are doing it illegally and should be stopped.

I was told by several customers that Annejoy Paine had once again infringed upon my copyright on textures I had filed DMCA in the past in the year 2007.

Annejoy Paine of aDiva has once again used textures taken from my Julia and Spring Romance Collection and most recently my Satin Shine Collection. I made Satin Shine Collection with textures taken from my original Julia and Spring Romance Designs.

Attached with this blog is the pictures I took wearing my original designs and outfits from aDiva.

First, I wore the gowns from my Julia Collection and Satin Shine Collection which has the cut and style I used from my older Spring Romance and shading textures from Julia.

Second, I wore outfits I got from friends who bought from aDiva and shot the pictures in the same lighting, position, focus and scale.

Third, I pasted the pictures on top of each other and the pixel for pixel shading is shown in the simple animation.

Note the exact alignment of the seams, thickness, proportion of the shading. Literally pixel for pixel.

When I first approached Annejoy Paine of aDiva in 2007 when I first found out about the textures, she claimed that she created it from scratched but after further investigation by me, I believe my textures have been infringed upon and filed DMCA. You can read about it in this Link

Annejoy Pain smudged and blended the centre and top shading but she neglected to change the bottom half which makes me believe that she did in some way obtained my illustrated files and is still using them after repeated DMCA against her in 2007 and early 2008.

best regards
Nicky Ree

Half Arsed: Froga Party!!

It was mere moments after Shai announced their release of the Eromenons Toga for men that Kallisto IMed me and told me I had to blog it. Little did she know I already had one leg up on the side of the tub and was shaving in eager anticipation (with Dove's razor of course…payback's a bish!!).

Tired of being the guy wearing the 360 thread count Martha Stewart sheets to all the toga parties on campus, this release couldn't have come at a better time - although, I do look great in Martha, don't get me wrong…in fact, I'd look good in a lot of people, I bet…..but I digress. If you're in the market, this toga is shiny white greatness…equipped with a prim flexi skirt and a prim peplos (the part of the robe that drapes over your shoulder, kind of like a shawl for those of you that wondered…thanks Google!!). They also come with some glitch undies for those of you not willing to shareyour mangina with the world in general.

Now, while historians will have you believe that men in Ancient Greece and Rome favored short hair, some very long and diligent study sessions (*cough* drinking beer *cough*) have led me to the revelation that they actually liked to rock the fro!! I wanted to keep it real, so I went to Boon and grabbed the KAR07 hair to help me adorn my classical look. I love this wild black mess - Medusa, eat your heart out!! Finishing everything off with some metal, I polished up my Byzantine Chain Choker from Essentia and slapped it on, and then got my spikes on with my Insurrection piercings from Primitive Design…and that is how we do!! Now that I've perfected my Froga outfit, I'm only lacking for one thing - yup, you guessed it - concubines and palm frond waving hand servants!! Ladies (and men, if you're so inclined) please send your applications to Lawlessisashamelesshor@gmail.com.
